Where to Install Carbon Monoxide Alarms in Your Rental Property

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a silent killer. It’s an odorless, colorless gas that can cause serious health issues or even death if inhaled in large quantities. As a landlord, it’s your responsibility to protect your tenants from this danger by installing carbon monoxide alarms in your property.

But where should you install them? According to UK regulations, carbon monoxide alarms must be installed in any room with a solid fuel-burning appliance, such as a wood-burning stove or coal fire. While it’s not a legal requirement for gas appliances, it’s highly recommended to install alarms in rooms with gas boilers or gas fires.

Place the alarm at head height, ideally on a wall or shelf, and ensure it’s at least one meter away from the appliance. Test the alarm regularly and replace the batteries as needed.
